Foster Success

From Foster to Forever

Why foster.

Getting Started

Is it hard to foster.  Don’t you want to keep them.  This is why.  Yes, it’s hard.  Yes, you will want to keep them.   This is Paw Patrol (in kennel) and Duke.  Why is Duke not in a kennel?  Great question.  Because they hate kennels.  Wrong.  Mo gets very upset when he can’t sleep in HIS kennel.  Last night he relinquished.  Tonight he demanded.  So we tried this.  What’s keeping Duke from wandering?  A sheet of cardboard.  This is night two.  Last night every time either foster moved, or Mo (lying outside his kennel) moved, there was growling and barking.  Three hours of broken sleep.  Maybe.  No whining, just posturing.  Tonight?  One growl.  Is this normal?  Nope.  Not with two.  But they never sleep the first night.  You’ll get through it.  Might have to sleep on the floor next to them.  Seriously.  You are their new world.  Why would anyone want to do that?  You have NO idea how satisfying and rewarding it is when a foster succeeds and thrives in their new forever home.  Will you foster fail?  Yes.  We all do.  Is it hard?  Yes.  It is hard.  The first one is crushingly hard to let go.  The next one is, too.  And the third.  Want to know the secret?  THEY ALL ARE.  If it wasn’t hard anyone could do it.  Are you anyone?  Then don’t.  Is it hard?  Yes.  It is hard.  Will you cry?  Yes.  We did, too.  Then why do you do it?  This.  This is why.  Last night the two fosters were in the two kennels.  Mo was outside on a bed.  Every time any of them moved there was a growl and a bark.    And I was up. And Theresa.  They usually whine.  These two just barked.  Tonight, they are together.  So far one bark.  No whining.  This is a success.  Why do we foster?  This is why.  A 15 month old puppy is sleeping on a couple blankets next to his human.  A broodie is in the kennel content to stay put next to the puppy and the resident male.  There will be a fight over these two.  Unless we claim them.  Oh, you didn’t know?  The fosterer has first dibs.  Want to fail?  Then fail.  When you foster you are at the top of the list.  Don’t be afraid to try.  Don’t be afraid to fail.  It’s expected.  It’s OK.  It’s normal.  We’ve all done it.  The best part?  When you don’t fail is even more rewarding than when you do.  I have a puppy sleeping contently next to me on night #2.  What more could you possibly need?
