New Owner Resources

Bringing home a greyhound is an exciting and meaningful moment—for you and for your dog. While many greyhounds adjust beautifully to home life, the first few months are a learning period as they discover new routines, sounds, and expectations. These resources are designed to help you feel supported, prepared, and confident every step of the way.

First 30, 60, 90 Days Home

Every greyhound adjusts at their own pace, but many follow a similar pattern as they settle into family life.

First 30 Days – Decompression

Your greyhound is learning what it means to live in a home. They may seem quiet, unsure, or clingy. Focus on calm routines, short walks, and building trust. Keep visitors and new experiences limited.

Days 31–60 – Confidence Building

Your dog begins to relax and show more personality. This is a great time to introduce basic training, gentle play, and longer walks. You may notice small challenges as your dog tests boundaries or becomes more comfortable.

Days 61–90 – Feeling at Home

By now, your greyhound recognizes your routine and feels safe. Their true personality shines through, and most dogs are ready for a more normal household schedule with continued training and socialization.

Supplies Checklist

Before your greyhound comes home, make sure you have:

  • Food and water bowls
  • High-quality dog food
  • Martingale collar (HGA provides one to take home)
  • Leash (HGA provides one to take home)
  • Comfortable bed and/or crate
  • Soft blankets
  • ID tag with your contact information
  • Nail clippers or grinder
  • Dog-safe shampoo
  • Basic first-aid supplies

Having these items ready helps your dog feel secure from day one.

Training & Behavior Tips

Greyhounds are intelligent and sensitive. They respond best to patience, routine, and positive reinforcement.

  • Use calm, consistent commands
  • Reward good behavior with praise or treats
  • Avoid punishment—greyhounds can shut down if frightened
  • Practice short, positive training sessions
  • Introduce stairs, mirrors, and household noises gradually
  • Maintain predictable feeding and walking schedules

Most greyhounds want to please and will thrive when they feel safe and understood.
