Beyond the "Gotcha Day": Meet Your Greyt Pals

Rose adopts new greyhound

You’ve signed the papers, bought the extra-large bed, and brought your new hound home. The first few days are magic—but then reality sets in. Maybe your dog has decided the stairs are "lava," or perhaps they’ve become a "statue" on your afternoon walk.

At Heartland Greyhound Adoption, we know that adoption isn’t just a transaction; it’s the start of a journey. That’s why we created the Greyt Pals program.

What is a Greyt Pal?

Think of a Greyt Pal as a personal mentor for your dog’s transition to retired life. Our Greyt Pals are experienced owners and volunteers who have "seen it all."

Why lean on a Greyt Pal?

  • The "Honeymoon" Phase: As your dog gets comfortable, their true personality emerges. A mentor can help you navigate new behaviors like testing boundaries or "counter-surfing."

  • Separation Confidence: Learning to be home alone is a big step for a dog that has lived in a kennel environment. We offer proven strategies to help them feel secure.

  • Sighthound Troubleshooting: From finding the right winter coat to understanding why your dog is suddenly afraid of the linoleum floor, no question is too small.

How to Connect

You don't have to do this alone. If you’re a new adopter looking for guidance—or an experienced owner who wants to become a mentor—reach out to us via our Facebook page or at adopt@heartlandgreyhoundadoption.org. We’re a community that speaks "Greyhound," and we’re here to help you and your hound thrive.
